Gabon made a bold bid to diversify its economy by creating 13 national parks in 2002, most of them containing gorilla habitat. The WLG habituation program at the Mikongo Conservation Centre in Lope National Park was terminated in 2010. But although visitors are no longer taken on specific gorilla-spotting treks, visitors can still see them while looking for other wildlife.

Moukalaba-Doudou National Park has some of the highest densities of gorillas, and an eco-tourism project has begun there with help from The Gorilla Organization.
Loan go National Park offers the rare combination of rainforest and Atlantic beach, where hippos have been seen surfing, whales and dolphins surface offshore and the forests are home to gorillas, chimpanzees and forest elephants .

The PGFV collaborates with a local ecotourism partner to facilitate the transportation of visitors from the nearby town of Omboué to Evengue-Ezango Island, where the Gorilla Sanctuary is located. Reservations for the Gorilla visits can be made by contacting the PGFV at least 24 hours in advance. Once at Evengue-Ezango Island, PGFV staff will provide a conservation lecture prior to each visit.

All gorillas at the Gorilla Sanctuary have been rescued by local or national wildlife authorities from the bush meat trade. These are not gorillas living in the wild.

It’s no surprise that the wildlife is so wary of humans – Gabon’s national parks have only been in existence since 2002. President Bongo realized that the country was too dependent on its oil, which wouldn’t last forever. But with its extensive rainforests and rich wildlife, including western lowland gorillas, tourism could be the key to Gabon’s economic future. More than 10% of the country was given over to a network of 13 national parks.

Gorilla Island in Gabon

There is one place in Gabon where a gorilla sighting is guaranteed. Operation Loan go runs a rehabilitation program me for gorillas a few hours north of the park on an island in the Fernan Vaz Lagoon. At Petit Envengue, also known as Gorilla Island,

The gorillas here have either been taken from captivity or orphaned, most likely when their mothers have been killed for bush meat. A small group of the primates, led by 26-year-old Mbeki, live in an enclosure that has been extended to cover half the island.

The plan is to build the group up, then move them to the opposite, larger island, where they would have even more autonomy. From there, they will eventually be released into a wild habitat that has lost its gorillas.

For now, the gorillas don’t have access to enough wild food, so are given supplementary food, such as sugar cane and bananas.

Getting to the Sanctuary

Traveling from Libreville to Port-Gentil by air its 30 minutes and by boat it’s about 8 hours
All tours are accompanied by one of PGFV’s gorilla keepers who is informed about the gorillas. Visit fees must be paid prior to each visit directly to the PGFV tour guide.

Because gorillas require routine and peace during feeding times, the PGFV reserves the right to postpone a visit. Visits may not be possible at times when a gorilla is sick or stressed.

A typical visit will last about 90 minutes including the conservation lecture but can be shortened when gorillas show signs of stress. Like any other human being or creature, you cannot be comfortable when stressed.
