Salonga National Park is in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1984, due to danger but was labelled a site in danger in 1999 due to urban development and poaching as the same effect to other wildlife National parks like Upemba National park , Garamba national park, kundelungu national park, Kahuzi Biega National Park for Gorilla trekking in Congo.

Salonga National Park is  36.000 km² Largest Africa forest national park in Africa and larger than Belgium, located at South of the majestic Congo River, in the lowlands of Congo is a natural treasure largely unknown: the Salonga National Park. It is the largest forest park in Africa and one of the last remaining intact tropical forests in the world. Salonga National Park is comprising a mosaic of rivers, streams, marshlands, typical grassy glades called bais and marshes, Salonga is home to 40% of the world’s bonobos.

Salonga National Park is the largest protected area of tropical forest in Africa and the third largest forest national park in the world. To date, it remains one of the few areas in the world that is big enough for the evolution process to occur at a natural rate and remain relatively undisturbed by human activity.

Salonga is situated in the heart of the Congo Basin, south of the Congo River and is divided . It spans over 36,000 km². It consists of two large blocks (“north” and “south”) separated by a corridor of about 45 km wide . Its shape is reminiscent of human lungs. And really nature breathes here.

Until now we know of 51 species of mammals, 129 species of fish and 223 species of birds who live in the Park. Surely many more will be discovered in the future. Several of those species are internationally endangered, particularly the forest elephant and the bonobo. Other large mammals are the leopard, nine kinds of antelopes including the bongo and 5 duiker species, giant pangolin and the hippopotamus.

Animals to look out for include the Congo water civets, Allen’s swamp mangabey, tree pangolins, Golden cats, leopards, black colobus monkeys, giant ground pangolins, golden-bellied Mangabey, dwarf bush baby, Bonobo, elephants, sitatunga, Potto monkeys, Wolf monkeys, duikers, Pygmy Cape buffaloes, white rhinos, Thollon red colobus, Angolan mongoose ad the red River hogs among others.
4. Fishing,
   Besides the wildlife and bird species, tourists interested in exploring the aquatic life of this Park can go on a fishing trip and it’s done within the rivers but tourists are always advised to move with their fishing equipments/gears so as to carry out this activity.
